VeRoy Canady Obituary

Captain G. VeRoy Canady, age 89, passed away peacefully Thursday morning, May 12, 2022, at his residence surrounded by his loving family, under the care of Kindred Hospice, after a brief illness.

VeRoy was born August 6, 1932, in Soperton, GA, on the family farm to the late John and Ruby Canady. At age 14 the family moved to Augusta, where he was told that the overalls he had worn on the farm all his life were not allowed at school, and his dad had to go buy him clothes in order to attend. He later graduated from Richmond Academy class of 1950. After graduating, VeRoy met and married his late wife Doris Adele Smith Canady, while working for the Lakeview Theatre in Augusta, where Doris sold tickets and VeRoy managed the theatre. He spent eight years with Modern Sheet Metal Roofing Company and six years operating the 15th Street “Fill -In” Service Station (Southland Oil Corporation) with his father. One afternoon having been tired of the Service Station business, he told his uncle Curt he wanted to go to work at the Sheriff’s Department. He filled out an application with then Sheriff Mutimer, and was hired the same day, and spent the next 34 years on the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department having worked in all capacities, including serving as Chief Deputy. Following the  passing of Doris, he met his faithful and loving companion, Betty Johnson-Anderson,  who took care of him for the last several years of his life.

In addition to his late wife, Captain Canady was preceded in death by his  parents, John and Ruby Canady; a daughter, Tammy K. Canady; his brother, John Doyce Canady; and a sister, Kathree Canady Terry. Survivors include his loving companion, Betty Johnson-Anderson of Augusta; her daughter, Renae and Brad James of Waynesboro; a son, Micheal and Debbie Canady of Martinez; four grandsons, John and Nikki Canady of Appling, Wade and Heather Faglier of Harlem, Evan Faglier, and Joshua Mock of Augusta; a granddaughter, Breann Faglier (Alden Williams) of Augusta; four great-grandchildren, Anniston and Grayson Canady of Appling, Teagan Drake of Augusta, and Tripp Faglier of Harlem; and nephews, Ralph Cowart and Alan Skipper of Statesboro.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 - 6:00 on Sunday, May 15th, 2022, at Thomas L.
