Shirley Fields Obituary

Shirley Ann Fields, 81 of Martinez, Georgia entered heavenly rest January 27, 2022. Shirley was born October 2, 1940, in Augusta, Georgia, and was a lifelong resident of Martinez, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bobby Lee Fields; son, Robert Lee Fields; parents, Sherman John Minyard and Annie Lou Minyard; brother, Leroy Minyard; and sister, Edna Stewart. Shirley retired from Humana Hospital and was recognized for her many years of service. During her tenure she was affectionately known as “The Cake Lady.” She loved to bake and her cakes and desserts were well known not only for their beautiful appearance but for their deliciousness as well, and were ordered for special occasions from friends and co-workers. She would literally work all day and come home in the evenings and bake all night. The house always smelled wonderful! In addition to her baking, she was known for being a wonderful cook. Nothing gave her greater pleasure than to have family and friends and even the occasional stranger sitting around her table enjoying the bounty of her efforts. No one ever visited her house without being fed, and there was room and food for all.

Her family and grandchildren were her greatest source of joy and accomplishment. She eagerly awaited the birth of each of her three grandchildren and was delighted in taking care of each one.

And spoiling them as much as she possibly could. When they would stay overnight, they each fought over the coveted spot of sleeping next to her. They have individual and collective memories of their time spent with her. She was proud of each grandchild’s accomplishments as they grew from childhood into adulthood. She always looked forward to spending time talking and laughing about the serious as well as the funny things going on with each one. Many of their friends and children who came to know her over the years affectionately referred to her as Nanny, and it was a role she wholeheartedly cherished.

Shirley is survived by daughter, Debra McGahee (Jimmy); son, David “Pete” Fields (Vicki Law); grandchildren, Hunter Fields (Morgan), Meagan McGahee and Summer Fields (Scott Des Marais); brothers, Vernon Minyard, Bruce Minyard (Linda); sisters, Helen Byce, Edith Rickerson (William), Vivian Wheeler (Kenneth) as well as a very special friend she considered to be a sister to her Janice Claxton (Glenn). She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Shirley was of Christian faith and served in various positions and committees at Hope Chapel in Augusta, Georgia. It was important to her as the matriarch of the family to ensure her children, grandchildren and any child who wanted to learn the gospel to attend church, and she always made a way for that to happen.
