Sharon Evans Obituary

The Evans/Wetzler families wish to announce the passing of their beloved mother and friend, Sharon Marie Evans on February 26, 2022 at Augusta University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia.  Born on March 25, 1945, in Currie, Minnesota, she was the only child of Mary Margaret Regnier (Varga) and Bernard (Barney) Joseph Regnier. While growing up, she and her parents moved often within the Colorado/New Mexico region. She viewed these moves as “adventures” and stated many times that it was exciting to be in new places. Sharon graduated, Valedictorian, from Del Norte High School in Del Norte, Colorado and went on to study at Adams State College, in Alamosa, Colorado.  At that time, she met Owen Dennis Evans whom she married and soon moved to Salt Lake City, Utah.

In 1968, they moved to Durango, Colorado where they settled. She worked as a bookkeeper and receptionist for several businesses in the area (Andy’s Photography, a credit union and Thumbprints T-shirts) until she decided to pursue her dream of going into law enforcement. In 1982, Sharon joined the La Plata County Sheriff’s Department where she served as a sheriff’s deputy, working in the jail. She then moved to Austin, Texas in 1988 to start the next chapter of her life and be closer to her children. She attended Mansfield Business College and received her certification as a Medical Administrative Assistant. She worked several jobs before starting another career at the Texas Education Agency (TEA). While at TEA, she made close friends whom she considered family.

Once she retired from TEA, she up and moved to Mount Vernon, Kentucky where she was a paid volunteer for Christian Appalachian Project (CAP) where she touched the lives of many women going through rehabilitation. After a couple years, Sharon moved to Augusta, Georgia to be closer to her daughter.  Sharon was introduced to many in the motorcycle community where she earned the nickname “Mama B”, which she wore proudly, especially while riding her own motorcycle.

She was known to have a quick smile, open heart, loud laugh, and adventurous spirit. She loved to write, wanting, one day, to finish her book. She had a true talent for putting words to paper. She enjoyed her “Paint-By-Numbers” kits and had even started painting her own pictures.

Sharon is survived by her children, Kathleen Wetzler, Matthew Bernard and Patty (Cary) Evans; grandchildren, Timothy and Nicole (Murabito) Wetzler, Joshua Evans, Kayla and Joshua Crawford, and Cary Evans; great grandchildren, Graham and Ford Wetzler, and Jeremy Crawford.
