Michael Mixon Obituary

Martinez, GA - Michael “Mike” Leroy Mixon, 74, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday December 5, 2021.

He was born in Kanawha County, West Virginia to the late Leroy Rueben Mixon and Mildred Payne Mixon. Raised in Augusta, he attended James L. Fleming Elementary School, Murphy Junior High School and was a proud graduate of George P. Butler High School Class of 1965. Through high school he proudly played clarinet in the George P. Butler Marching Band under the direction of Mr. B.H. Walker. Michael attended Andrew College then graduated from Brewton Parker College with a B.A. in Mental Retardation. He continued on to Augusta College and graduated with a B.S. in Special Education. He retired after 30 years with Gracewood State School and Hospital as a Special Education Teacher and Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor.

Mike loved his community from a young age. He was an Eagle Scout and then became a Den Chief. He volunteered for the Golden Harvest Food Bank for many years. He was a faithful blood donor for Shepherd Blood Center giving over 30 gallons of blood and he had tee shirts for every unit to prove it. He was honored with the Community Service Award by the Woodmen of the World. Mike continued to be active with his friends from the Butler High School Class of 1965. He gladly assisted in planning all of the reunions. An avid organist, he was a member of the Atlanta Chapter of the American Theater Organ Society. He played for many civic, private and community events. He served as the organist at One Way Baptist Church for many years. His favorite hymn was "It Is Well With My Soul". Michael was an excellent chef and a master cake decorator. He enjoyed gardening and studying genealogy. Michael was a former member of Fleming Baptist Church and a current member of Curtis Baptist Church.

He leaves behind his beloved sister, Lisa Mixon Jones (Gary); niece, Christina Lee Houchens (Casey); nephew, Jason Corey Jones (Kimberly); great-niece, Isabelle Charlotte Houchens; great-nephew, Tyler Ryan Jones; aunt, Betty Payne White (Fran); and a host of cousins.

The family would like to thank Amedisys Home Health Care, Regency Southern Hospice Care - especially Ansley Yawn and Chaplin Keith.  Also, Reverend Melissa Willis from First Baptist Church Augusta who was so faithful and loving to Michael as well as the family. The nursing staff at the Special Procedures Unit at University Hospital, especially Linda Bush. Michael was very fortunate to have Dr. Rakhi Kheraj and Dr. Anthony D. Goei who walked with Michael every step of his illness to be sure he was safe and well cared for. A great big thank you to you both and your teams.

There will be a private memorial service at a later date and his cremated remains will be interred beside his family in Fairfax, South Carolina.
