After an extended illness, Martha Jean Eller Blount (73) went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, April 8, 2024, in Martinez, Georgia.
She is survived by a son, Paul Christian Horner; two stepsons, John Byne Blount III, and James Darril Blount; her stepmother, Nina Eller Adams; a sister, Eunita Eller Gunn (Tim); a stepbrother, Rex Allen (Phyllis); an aunt, Judy Gibby Cannon; a niece, Elizabeth Gunn; and a nephew, Dustin Allen (Kelly).
She was preceded in death by her second husband, John Byne Blount, Jr. (d. 2023); her first husband, Don Preston Horner (d. 1978); her parents, James Calvin “J. C.” Eller and Pearl Maxine Gibby Beavers; and her brother, Calvin Warren Eller.
Martha was born in Asheville, North Carolina, on September 7, 1950. She grew up in Thomson, Georgia, and graduated from Thomson High School in 1968. She earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Augusta College in 1983 and a Master of Science in Healthcare Administration from Central Michigan University in 1995.
For many years Martha worked in accounting and hospital administration until her retirement in 2019. Her places of work included University Hospital, McDuffie Regional Medical Center, Rockdale Medical Center, Northeast Georgia Medical Center, and Humana Hospital.
Martha and her beloved husband John were longtime faithful members of Warren Baptist Church, where they sang in the choir for many years. In addition to singing, Martha also played the flute and was an accomplished pianist. She and John enjoyed traveling together, which included regular trips to Hilton Head Island. She loved celebrating the Christmas season with family and friends. Martha’s additional interests included reading, cooking, doing jigsaw puzzles, and watching The Golden Girls and the Hallmark Channel.
John’s niece, Jane Marcoux (Steve) would like to thank all of those who cared for Martha, with special thanks to Tana Welch who was by her side in her last moments. In addition, Olga Wilson, Michele Grossman, Hope Kooring, Ashley Gross, India McElderry, Karen Hensley, Nikki White, Elnora Dixon, and many others played vital roles in the loving care that Martha received.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the Chapel at Warren Baptist Church, 3203 Washington Road, Augusta, Georgia 30907. Reverend Andrew Skelton will be officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Warren Baptist Church.
