Obituary

Gunta Mangulis, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, entered into rest at the age of 89 on Thursday, April 20, 2023, in North Augusta, South Carolina. She formerly lived in Schenectady, New York, and most recently in Aiken, South Carolina.

Gunta Mangulis “Gigi” was born in Madonna, Latvia, and moved to the United States at the age of 12 along with her parents, Rudolfs and Anna Gosts.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Laimonis Mangulis, and her brother, Uldis Gosts. She is survived by her children, Inta Beebe (Ricky Beebe), Andrejs Mangulis, Tija Cross, and Maris Mangulis (Lynn Burtner); grandchildren, Grant Beebe, Harlan Mangulis, Armand Mangulis, and Kyler Mangulis; and great-grandchild, Stella James Avery.

Gunta was a devoted mother to her children, often placing herself last in terms of what they needed. She was also a gifted cook and was always pleased to set the table with her fine china. She enjoyed her crystal and China and collected tea pots and Lladros. “Gigi” was especially known for her exquisite baking as well. She lovingly made the best hazelnut tortes for birthdays and never went empty handed to an event with making her klingeris, a Latvian sweet bread formed into a pretzel shape. It was often requested and always well received. Her children all helped her make piragi for the holidays, a much loved Latvian bacon bun. The family continues this tradition and will lovingly remember these special times.

Mrs. Mangulis loved to dance with her husband and enjoyed many modes of music as well. You could always guess her mood to the type of music she had on. Her friends and family were blessed by her even nature and those who grew to know her at the nursing home would say she was content and pleasant but with a sparkle in her eye that might hint to a bit of precociousness.

Gigi went to work in the 70’s in Central Supply, then later became involved with patient care, often standing in for an absent mom, holding and consoling those who needed some love and care. When not working, she enjoyed camping with her family, sewing and day trips to Lake Sacandaga in New York with her dear neighbors and their families. Gigi was known for her love of laughter and always enjoyed small gatherings. Her generosity was displayed by taking in her elders in a full to the rim household, and she always shared what she whatever she had.

Gunta will be laid to rest in the Latvian Memorial Park Cemetery in Elka Park, New York next to her loving husband. In the south, she will be remembered when the Jasmine bloom and fill the air with it's redolent scent.

Due to her compassionate nature, and in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Jude's Children’s Hospital (www.stjude.org).
