Dr. Jessie Stewart Obituary

Dr. Jessie Byne Stewart entered into rest Tuesday September 7, 2021 at the University Hospital Augusta, Georgia at the age of 80.

Services will be held at 12:00 PM Saturday, September 11, 2021 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 825 N. Belair Rd., Evans, GA, with The Rev. Greg Porterfield and Rev. Gary Dean officiating. Family visitation will be 11:00 AM until 11:45 AM prior to the service at the church. Mausoleum Entombment will be at Bellevue Memorial Gardens, 4501 Wrightsboro Rd., Grovetown, GA.

She is preceded in death by her parents Edward Hamilton Byne and Mae Sizemore Byne of Augusta, GA, and a daughter Jessica Suzanne Stewart Chatham. She is survived by her beloved husband of 56 years, John Stewart, son Captain Edward Scott Stewart (Kim), daughter Jennifer Stewart Beckham (Jackie ), twelve grandchildren- Brandon Stewart (Amanda), Reagen Mirt, James Holley, Jessica Holley Castillo (Joey), Cade Chatham, Cambrey Chatham, Anna Stewart, Katie Stewart and Mitch Stewart, Mabel Kitchens and Jonah Kitchens, Jessica Bree Shove (Jesse). Two great-grandchildren: Camren Joseph Castillo and Samatha Byne Castillo; two cousins, Dr. Mary Hamilton Anderson (Jimmy), and Catherine Hamilton Cowart. Jessie also leaves behind her beloved furbaby Bella.

A graduate of Richmond Academy, Jesse went on to LaGrange College where she received her Bachelor's of Art degree in History and Music. She later attended the University of Georgia where she received her Master's of Education Degree in Intelectual Disabilities, a six year degree in Special Education and a six year degree in Supervision and Instruction. Nearing retirement in her education career, Jessie received her Doctorate Degree in Christian Counseling from the University of Andersonville Theological Seminary.

Jessie devoted a total of 53 years to her education career. Those include Gracewood State School for the Mentally Challenged; Assistant Instructor, University of Georgia College of Education; Assisatnt Professor, Augusta College School of Education; Director of Student Services, Thomson-McDuffie School System; and Director of the Georgia Learning Resource System. Through the years, Jessie received many awards and recognitions for her projects and outstanding services.

Jessie loved Wesley Church and insisted on attending every service she could. Many thanks and appreciation goes out to Wesley Cares Group who did such a wonderful support job in bringing flowers to Jessie and the many cards and letters Jessie enjoyed reading again and again. Special thanks to Rev. Greg Porterfield for his trips to our house and hospital to talk and pray with Jessie. Special thanks,also, to Rev. Gary Dean of Atlanta, GA who never failed to check in with Jessie by phone and FaceTime to see how she was doing and to leave her with words encouragement.
