Allen Byron Gilbert

January 3, 1940 ~ September 27, 2022 (age 82) 82 Years Old

Allen Byron Gilbert, third son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Clyde R. Gilbert, departed this life on September 27, 2022, at 82 years of age. He was born in Sylacauga, Alabama on January 3, 1940, then the family moved to the Augusta area in 1952. He graduated from Richmond Academy in 1957 and almost immediately went active in the Navy Reserve hoping to travel. He made two Mediterranean cruises and, as an assault boat coxswain, helped land U.S. Marines in Lebanon.

Upon completion of active duty, he entered the Junior College of Augusta where he was elected to Phi Theta Kappa honor society. After graduating, he went on to Mercer University for the remainder of his undergraduate studies and then to law school there. He was elected to Blue Key honor society and served on the Law Review. He then took and passed the state bar exam, but accepted an appointment as Special Agent of the FBI. He served in Albany and Syracuse, NY, Monterey, CA, and Washington D.C.

Upon the death of his father he received a hardship transfer to Statesboro, GA in order to care for his mother. In 1975 he was transferred to Augusta. During his time here, he was the agent charged with the case of a Hungarian spy apprehended in Augusta, as well as several other major cases. He retired in 1990.

Byron was preceded in death by his dear younger sister, Wanda deSaram; his older brother, Jan R. Gilbert; and his dear friend, Patricia S. Hall. He is survived by Patricia S. Hall’s two sons and two grandchildren; his older brother, Rodney C. Gilbert of St. Petersburg, FL; his nephew, Alan deSaram; and his niece, Georgia deSaram Webster.

At his direction, there will be no funeral service. His remains will be cremated and spread as directed. If memorials are made, consider a donation to Friends of the Augusta Library.
