SGM (Retired) Alexander John Loungeway, Sr., entered into rest on the afternoon of Monday, July 25, 2022, from natural causes at Eisenhower Army Medical Center. A native of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, he was born to Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Loungeway. He was the youngest of three, having two older sisters, Gloria Jean and Barbara Ann (both deceased).The family later relocated to Tampa, Florida, where he met his first wife, Elizabeth, during high school. They married soon after her graduation and he began his career in the U.S. Army. Alex and Betty, as they were most commonly known, were married for nearly 51 years, until Betty’s death in May 2013. They had three children, Alexander John Loungeway, Jr., (deceased), Timothy Mark Loungeway, and Gloria Ann Loungeway, and four grandchildren. In his later years he married a second time in 2016 to Veronica Prescott, of Williston, South Carolina.
SGM Loungeway served proudly for 30 years in the U.S. Army. During his career, he served in Germany, Vietnam, and Korea. It was his military service that brought the family to the Augusta area , where he ultimately retired. He made a second career as a draftsman for Looper Cabinets. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran and he supported the building of the U.S. Army Museum, in Washington, D.C. SGM Loungeway enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life. He enjoyed gardening, lawn care, playing cards, model railroading, building military models, postal stamp collecting, and puzzles. He passed on several of these hobbies to his children. He was active throughout the years in the Augusta Model Club and the Greater Augusta Stamp Club, serving as officers in both organizations.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00am on Friday, July 29th, 2022 in the Chapel at Bellevue Memorial Gardens, 4501 Wrightsboro Road, Grovetown, GA 30813. The family will receive friends one hour to service time. Interment on the grounds with military honors will immediately follow.
