IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Tommy
Mays
August 22, 1941 – April 12, 2025
Leonard T. "Tommy" Mays, 83, peacefully entered into rest at his home on Saturday, April 12, 2025.
Born on August 15, 1941, Tommy was a lifelong resident of Augusta. He married his childhood sweetheart, Peggy Ruth Mays, and the two shared more than 58 wonderful years of marriage before her passing in 2019. Since then, Tommy longed for the day he would be reunited with his beloved Peggy in Heaven.
A man of deep faith, Tommy committed his life to the Lord at the age of ten, and his walk with God became the foundation of his kind and generous spirit. He was a longtime member of Marks Baptist Church, and most recently, First Baptist Church of Evans, where he actively served on several committees.
Tommy graduated from Richmond Academy in 1960, where he played left guard on the varsity football team. His team participated in the South GA Championship, his senior year and this brotherhood he cherished, especially as he recently reconnected with several teammates.
He dedicated over 40 years of service to Georgia Iron Works in Grovetown, managing the shipping and trucking department. Known for his strong work ethic and eye for detail, Tommy took great pride in running his department with excellence.
In retirement, Tommy enjoyed fishing with his sweetheart and spending time outdoors—often on his tractors or lawnmowers, always staying busy. He was also a devoted caregiver to his wife, mother, and brother during their times of illness, never wavering in his love and service to them. He also shared his love of boats and motorcycles with friends and cherished their memories together.
Family meant everything to Tommy. He was a proud and loving father to his two daughters, Peggy Lynn Mays and Dana Ruth Mays Samples, and was always present in their lives—serving as PTO President during their elementary years and Booster Club President in high school. His love and support extended deeply to his grandchildren: Macey Elizabeth Samples Johnson, Madison Ruth Samples, and Bobby "Thomas" Samples, Jr.
He is survived by his daughters, Peggy Lynn Mays and Dana Ruth Mays Samples (Bobby); his sister, Linda Mays Stewart (Pat); his grandchildren, Macey Elizabeth Samples Johnson (Caleb), Madison Ruth Samples, and Bobby "Thomas" Samples, Jr.; and his great-grandchildren, Landon Glenn Johnson and Riley May Johnson. He also leaves behind many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
In addition to his wife Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard P. and Grace Mays, and his brother, Lloyd Henry Mays.
