Obituary

Nellie "Nell" (Pleasant) Reaves, age 97, went home to be with her Lord on March14, 2023, in Summerville, GA, where she had gone to live with her daughter, Anita Greer, since July, 2021.

Nellie lived most of her adult life in Martinez, GA. Nell was born in Doeville, Tennessee. She graduated from Mars Hill College and Carson Newman College. After graduation, she advanced her education at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, earning her Master's degree in Religious Education.

It was at Seminary in New Orleans, where she met her husband, James W. Reaves, Jr. They went on school mission trips together, which furthered her love of spreading God's Word. Nell continued sharing her love for Jesus through the "chapel on wheels ministry" at Curtis Baptist Church, which traveled to mobile home parks around Augusta conducting weekly Bible classes and Vacation Bible Schools. If Nell told you she was going to pray for you, she did, as evidenced by her many prayer journals. She wrote out scripture cards with over 1000 scriptures and memorized the verses through the years. Her family saw her "reviewing" (her verse cards) every day. Nell was a member of Warren Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Since being homebound, she faithfully watched Moody Church and Dr. Charles Stanley. During the pandemic, she began watching Facebook live services of Gene and Anita's church, South Summerville Baptist Church. Though she maintained church membership, this is not where she placed the certainty of her eternal home. She fully trusted Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross because of her sin, to take her to heaven.

From 1967 to 1984, Mrs. Reaves taught elementary school at Curtis Baptist School. Then she "graduated" to high school and taught remedial Math at Midland Valley High School until her retirement at age 68. When she began teaching remedial Math, she did not even know how to operate a computer, never having used one before. As she taught her students Math, they taught her computer skills. As a "life-long learner," Nell continued improving her technology expertise by joining Facebook at age 84, where she kept up with many of her former students.

Mrs. Reaves is survived by three of her daughters, Anita Reaves Greer of Summerville, GA, Benita Reaves Fernandez of Hammond, LA, and Nelda Reaves Allen of Martinez, GA; three grandchildren, Arianna James, Jared Fernandez, and Tripp Greer; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Nell is preceded in death by her husband, James W. Reaves, Jr.; one daughter, Jama Sue Reaves; her parents, Robert D. and Onnie Arnold Pleasant; an infant sister, Eva Pleasant; and two brothers, Weldon G. Pleasant and Ray R. Pleasant.

The graveside service will be conducted by her son-in-law, Dr. Gene Greer, at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 17, 2023, at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 2700 Deans Bridge Road, Augusta, GA 30906.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution can be made to an organization she supported until her death: Child Evangelism Fellowship of Augusta, P.O. Box 2553, Evans, GA 30809 or online at https://cefgreateraugusta.com/donate

Arrangments are entrusted to Thomas L King Funeral Home, 124 Davis Road, Martinez, GA 30907.
