Obituary

Nancy Mary Jansson Schultz, 92, of Augusta, GA, died October 11th, 2025 after a battle with Alzheimers. Schultz was born in Kansas City, MO to Lora Griffin and Al Jansson, and grew up in Oklahoma City, OK. She graduated from Park College in Parkville, MO and completed one year at the University of Oklahoma’s school of nursing. In 1955 she married Dr. Everett Hoyle Schultz. They were married for 70 years. They lived in North Carolina and Florida before moving to Augusta in 1987.

She was an award-winning artist, and had work juried into many exhibitions, including the American Watercolor Society. Her paintings are in many private and corporate collections, including the Medical College of Georgia, Deloitte and Touche, University Hospital and the Augusta National Golf Club. She was a member of the National League of American Pen Women and is included in the Archives on Women Artists, The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC, and in Who’s Who in America and in Who’s Who of American Women. She was a signature member of the Georgia Watercolor Society, and was their newsletter editor for two years.

In 1988 she founded the group Women on Paper in Augusta, which has met once a week and painted plein air for decades. They have shown their work together in exhibitions throughout Georgia, and South Carolina, including Aiken Center for the Arts, Sacred Heart Cultural Center, Emory Law School Library, the Governor’s Mansion, and the Quinlan Visual Arts Center.

From Annette Bush, in a 2009 blog post, about Women on Paper:

They have encouraged each other through painter’s block, critiqued new work and encouraged new directions. They have donated awards, money to watercolor societies and paintings for fund raisers. They have quietly painted the town and made a name for themselves.

Nancy’s gentle, yet no-nonsense manner has guided them through the seasons and through group exhibitions from local venues to the Governor’s Mansion. Last month, this group of accomplished painters celebrated with a 20th Anniversary Show. The gallery was filled with family, friends and patrons. It was a show of work of Women on Paper, but it was a tribute to Nancy.

She will be remembered by her family and friends as a gentle teacher, a bright spirit, a loving encourager, and a woman of incredible kindness and creativity.

She is survived by her children Susan Schultz of Atlanta, GA; Frank Schultz of Atlanta, GA; Janet (Joey) Helmick of Florence, AL; Sally (Graham) Holmes of Birmingham, AL; 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband Dr. Everett H. Schultz, Jr, her sisters Charlene Bittle and Sally Lamprich, and her brother Roland Jansson.
