MARTINEZ, Ga. - Marian S. Pittman passed into the Lord s arms on Sunday, February 22, 2015 at the Place at Martinez. Visitation will be at the King Funeral Home on Davis Road on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Burial will be private. Marian was born in Augusta, Ga. on December 2, 1920 to parents W.H. and Carrie Inglett Smith. She is survived by her children: daughter, Kathy S. Price (Larry); sons, Bill Sarver (Judy), Ricky Pittman (Peggy), and Monty Pittman; her grandchildren, Beth Heath (Chris), Larry A. Price, Jr. (Kristen), Evan Pittman (Lindsey), Emily Valenti (Damian), and Katie Chandler (Shane); her great-grandchildren, Karly and Caroline Heath, Lawson and Palmer Price and Crockett Pittman; niece, Billy Ann Jones (Lee); and a special nephew, Charles Hutto. She was preceded in death by her parents, W. H. and Carrie I. Smith; first husband, Bill Sarver and second husband, U. H. Pittman; brother, Bill Smith; sister, Vera Hughes; sister-in-law, Pat S. Murphy (Jerry) and brother-in-law, Don Sarver (Manetta); also, a very special family friend, Louise Simmons. She attended elementary school and graduated from Tubman High School for Girls in 1938. She worked as a secretary at Blanchard & Calhoun, Committee of 100 and First Federal Savings, where she retired. After her retirement, she also worked at Grace United Methodist Church in North Augusta, S.C. for awhile and then went to work with her son, Monty, at his florist from 1982 to 2009. She met her first husband, Bill Sarver, a semi-pro baseball player who was drafted by the New York Yankees. He was playing semi-pro ball in Augusta at the old Jennings Stadium when they met and were introduced by Ralph Houk. They were married on December 9, 1942 in Kansas City, Mo. Bill was called to serve his country attending OCS at Ft. Sill, OK. He was killed on April 6, 1945 and was awarded the Silver Star for valor and courage, thinking only of his men. Their daughter, Kathy, was 15 months old at the time of his death, and a son, Bill, was born five months after his death. She married U. H. Pittman in March 1950 and had two sons, Ricky and Monty. They moved to Martinez, where U. H. served as a County Commissioner for four years and they both remained very active in the Republican Party. Marian served as Secretary of the Greater Columbia County Republican Women for several years and she was also active in the Secretary Club in Augusta. She was an active member of Martinez Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School to many young children about the love of Jesus. She also became active at Warren Baptist Church, serving as Secretary of her Sunday School class and singing in the choir for years. For her work at the Committee of 100, she was awarded the Flying Orchid Award from Delta Air Lines. This was awarded to recognize her support of Delta Air Lines and her goodwill toward the Air Transport Industry and her hard work. She also was recognized by the GCCRW for being the oldest Republican Woman of the CSRA. She also served on the board of the Dept. of Family and Children Services in Columbia County and served on the Ga. State Silver Haired Legislature and worked for the American Cancer Society.
