Obituary

Jospeh Francis Whitehead III, 69, of Augusta, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2025.

Joe was a 1974 graduate of Glenn Hills High School, received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Maryville College in Maryville TN, his Juris Doctorate from the NOVA School of Law in Davie Florida and his Master of Sports Management from Barry University in Miami Shore Florida.  Joe coached cross country at Barry University Miami Shores FL. He was the Compliance Director at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green KY. While there he wrote the athletic compliance manual for the university, this manual was submitted to and accepted by the NCAA on first submission.

Joe would later go on to become the Director of Athletic Compliance at East Tennessee State University and a Student Advocate as well. He also served as Director of Student Volunteers at Johnson City Medical Center.  He received an Award of Excellence for turning this program around and for the amount of volunteer growth the program experienced. He was the District Manager for Routes for Johnson City Press and also volunteered for many years with the Appalachian Conservancy to preserve and protect the trails for future generations. Joe worked at the 2002 Winter Olympics hosted in Salt Lake City Utah.

Joe's analytical mind allowed him to approach situations in a logical, goofy, OCD and an out of the box way.  He is known for his quiet demeanor and love for his family. He was a loving partner, son, brother and a proud father to his two sons and only granddaughter.  He was Johnny on the spot when anyone needed him. We know Joe is having a philosophical conversation with Benjamin Franklin concerning the Declaration of Independence. He will be deeply missed by all that knew him.

He is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Francis Whitehead II.

Survivors include his life partner, Cathy Calhoun; his mother, Mary Whitehead; sister, Valerie Whitehead (Sherry); his sons, Jeremy Whitehead (Julie), and Justin Whitehead; and his precious granddaughter, Rylee Whitehead.

The family will receive friends for a Celebration of Life on October 18, 2025 from 2:00 until 7:00 PM at his sister's home, 2821 Springwood Dr. Augusta GA 30909.

In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests donations be made to the Boy Scouts of America where Joe was a proud Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow, or to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.
