IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Earl
Charlton
September 20, 1936 – August 5, 2025
John Earl Charlton passed peacefully at his home in Augusta, GA with his wife beside him shortly after midnight on August 5, 2025. Mainly known as Earl, many of his American friends called him Duke. Earl grew up in Coledale, New South Wales, Australia and later lived on the Gold Coast before moving to Augusta, GA. While on the Gold Coast, he thrived on his many joys such as snorkeling, lawn bowls, and deep sea fishing. While living in America, Earl continued his love of fishing and being near the ocean on Oak Island, NC. Although Earl loved his native country of Australia, he was also very proud of becoming a US citizen several years ago.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Dot Charlton. He sorrowed deeply after the loss of his beloved pets: Tinki-Tu, Sally, Polo, Penny, and Mister Boots.
Survivors include his wife of twenty-five years, Charley Ann, his sisters Con Fitzsimmons and Gay Jess, his niece, Stacey Scaffardi, and nephews, Lei Jess and James Sarti, and sister- in-law, Lorraine Stewart.
A celebration of Earl's life will be held in October while his sister is visiting from Australia. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to That's What Friends Are For, Inc. Donations can be made in Earl Charlton's memory on their website, https://thatswhatfriendsarefor.org or by mailing TWFAF, PO Box 9490, Augusta, GA 30916.
Our family extends gratitude to Georgia Hospices, our cousin, Robbin Smith and our wonderful friend and neighbor, John Howell.
We shall miss Earl every day and the fun Aussie flavor he brought to our lives .
