Jessie
Jones
Feb 8, 1948 — Sep 6, 2026
Jessie Jones, 78, of North Augusta, passed away on September 6, 2026.
Jessie Jones was born on February 8, 1948, to Junior and Mary Helen Jones in Beaumont, Texas. On September 6, 2026, Jessie peacefully fell asleep in death, leaving behind a lifetime of memories cherished by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Jessie was a man who never met a stranger. Known affectionately as “Mr. Jessie” or “J.J.,” he had a warm and welcoming personality that made people feel at ease. He was blessed with a wonderful sense of humor and a positive outlook on life. His resemblance to the late General Colin Powell was so striking that he was occasionally mistaken for him.
Jessie was always willing to lend a helping hand. Whether someone needed advice, encouragement, or a practical solution to a problem, he was ready to help. He was also known for sharing his favorite home remedies and offering a listening ear when someone simply needed to talk. Jessie was a loving father, generous friend, and caring person who often put the needs of others before his own. His kindness and willingness to help touched the lives of many.
Jessie was also a man of many interests and passions. He had a deep love of music and enjoyed an extensive collection of vinyl records, tapes, and CDs. His musical tastes ranged from funk, R&B, jazz, rock, and disco to Zydeco. He was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan and enjoyed both playing and watching golf.
Running remained a lifelong passion for Jessie. As a student at Crispus Attucks High School, he excelled in track and field and established several state records. He continued to enjoy running for exercise throughout his life.
Jessie proudly served in the United States Army for 24 years before retiring at Fort Gordon. Following his military career, he worked for 19 years as a security guard at University Hospital Prompt Care.
He also enjoyed raising and breeding bulldogs, fishing, shrimping, crabbing, and hunting. He loved automobiles and spent many enjoyable hours building engines and working on cars with friends. He especially enjoyed watching and attending drag races.
Jessie’s greatest legacy, however, was not found in his accomplishments or hobbies, but in the love he shared with others. His humor, generosity, wisdom, and willingness to help made him a special presence in the lives of those around him. He was deeply loved and will be dearly missed.
Jessie was preceded in death by his parents, Junior and Mary Helen Jones, and his sister, Ammie Williams (Nelson).
He leaves to cherish his memory his son, Jesse Jones (Sonya); daughter, Tammy Coburn (Mark Anthony Coburn II); brother, John Jones (Connie); sister, Jackie Clark (Vernon); grandchildren, Eboni Coburn and Mark Anthony Coburn III; former spouse, Charlesetta Jones; and a host of extended family members, friends, and loved ones.
The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Friday September 18, 2026 from 3:00 until 5:00 PM at Thomas L. King Funeral Home. Military Honors will be accorded at the visitation.
