Gertie
Vest
Aug 18, 1945 — Aug 26, 2026
Gertrude R. Vest, affectionately known as Gertie or Nana, passed away on August 26, 2026.
Gertie was born in Austria right after World War II and later moved to the United States after marrying her husband, the late Gerald W. Vest. She managed the Days Inn and then later Masters Inn on Washington Rd. for many years before her retirement. Her cooking was enjoyed by many especially her German Potato Salad and she always kept plenty of food on hand as she never wanted anyone to go hungry and there was always a spot waiting at her table. She was a strong and independent woman who would never ask for much but would give all she could to anyone, and her door was always open to visitors.
She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She enjoyed sitting and birdwatching her cardinals and her hummingbirds. Her favorite spot was Holden Beach NC, or family picnics at the lake. She was one of the strongest and most outspoken women who touched many lives, and she will be deeply missed by all that knew her.
She is preceded in death by her parents Louis and Vera Rigitnik; her husband, Gerald W. Vest; her great grandson, Bentley; and her brother, Fred Rigitnik and her sister, Margaret Schaar.
Survivors include her children, Jerry Vest (Shelley), Lill Stewart (Roger), Norman Vest, and Debbie Goode (Lee); her grandchildren, Jonathan Vest (Ashlyn), Kaitlyn Vest, Shelby Vest, Jeremy Reeves (Jessica), Cameron Goode (Chastity), and Allie Goode; and her great grandchildren, Caden, Colton, Anthony, Jaxson, Blake, Peyton, and Remi.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, August 28, 2026 at Bellevue Memorial Gardens with Rev. Alan Leach officiating.
In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests donations to St. Jude or to the American Heart Association.
