Obituary

Mrs. Georgia Hedgis, 93 years old, and beloved wife of 65 years to James "Jim" John  Hedgis. entered into rest on December 13, 2024 at Camellia Walk in Evans.

Mrs. Hedgis was born November 1, 1931, in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, to the late Constantine (Gus) Cavooris and Theano Cavooris.  She moved to Greece with her family as a baby and returned when she was almost sixteen years old. She attended Fort Hamilton High School in NY and studied short hand. She met the love of her life at a church dance.

Her first full-time job was working as a secretary at the Empire State Building. She retired as a secretary for the Academic Dean at Fairfield University, Connecticut. Upon moving to Georgia with her husband, in order to be closer to their children and grandchildren, Georgia and Jim were active members at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Augusta. She volunteered by helping at many Greek Festivals and was also a volunteer in her daughter's first grade classroom at Bel Air Elementary. She was an active member of Philoptochos.  Philoptochos is an Orthodox organization which strives to promote charitable, benevolent, and philanthropic outreach for the orthodox community.

She loved to sing in the church choir. Her favorite past times were reading, listening to Opera, dancing, and attending Broadway play productions and traveling. Her favorite role was being "Yiayia" and would teach them Greek words, traditions, and recipes to her grands and great grands.

Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Monday, December 16, 2024 at Westover Memorial Park led by Rev. James Barnes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Hedgis and her son, Nick Hedgis. She is survived by her daughter, Debbie Callan (Richard Callan Sr,) and her grandchildren: Danielle Starcher (Andy), Jessica Williams (Mark), Richard Callan Jr. (Katherine), Sarah Hedgis -Kilgerman, (Roger), Kursten Hedgis, James Hedgis (Cora), and Molly Stamey (Colton) and eight great-grandchildren.

Special thank you to those who helped take care of Georgia these last four years: private caregivers and special friends, Cathy and Tamara, Matt (PT) and John (OT), Embrace/Memory Care Staff at Camellia Walk, and Enhabit Hospice.
