Freddie Preston Lott, age 85, of Augusta, GA, passed away peacefully at home on June 30th, 2026.
Freddie was born on May 22, 1941 to Ruth Jones. He was raised by his stepfather Sam Jones and mother in Williston, South Carolina alongside his sister Rose Ann Lott.
After graduating from Williston-Elko high school, he went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force in August 1959. He enlisted for 4 years, but his time was extended for 9 months due to the Cuban Missile Crisis. While part of the Air Force Air Police, he was awarded Top Secret Security clearance and several instructor certifications all before the age of 23. His most important task was guarding nuclear weapons. After a short, but impressive time in the Air Force, Freddie was released from active duty and ultimately chose to stay close to his parents who had moved to Martinez, GA.
Freddie spent much of his career proudly serving his local community as a Police Officer. During his tenure, he was a narcotics investigator, motor officer, patrol supervisor, and member of an organized crime task force until he was promoted to Chief of Police in 1986. After dedicating 27 years of his life to the citizens of Augusta, Chief Lott retired in September 1991 as the youngest at the time in Augusta Police department history.
In 1966, Freddie married Patricia Ann Alewine, and they shared 59 years together until her recent passing on Christmas Day 2025. He is survived by his children Gail Crawford and Sherri Norris (Terry) along with his grandchildren Cheri, Kenneth, Kaitlin, and Sarah and 4 great grandchildren with one on the way. He will also be dearly missed by his niece and nephews, Stephanie Flanders (Don) and Kenny Williams along with cousin Candice (Byron) Coan-Widener. In addition to his family, Freddie leaves behind his cherished cats, Sunshine and T2, who he considered to be like his children.
Outside of work, he enjoyed traveling all over the country in an RV with his wife Ann.They visited every U.S. state (except Hawaii), meeting up with friends at RV rallies, and playing Black Jack at casinos. His most treasured years were spent at his home on Clark’s Hill lake where he would take loved ones out on the pontoon and later cook delicious home meals like pork roast and greasy rice or catfish stew. Friends and family will remember his love of cigars, his booming voice as he said the dinner prayer, and his fierce loyalty.
He was preceded in death by his parents Sam & Ruth, sister Rose Ann, nephew Kerry, wife Ann, and son Vincent.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday July 17th, 2026 at Thomas L. King Funeral Home from 5-7pm. All are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Georgia Chapter of C.O.P.S. which supports the families of fallen officers. Contributions may be made online at https://www.gacops.org/.
