Obituary

Fermon James Poole of Ellenwood, Georgia, transitioned on February 22, 2024. He was born on April 27, 1939, in Kennedy, Alabama, to Burris and Lizzie Poole.

Fermon was a U.S. Army veteran who served two terms from 1961 – 1962 and 1967 – 1969. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class. Fermon enjoyed traveling, fishing, driving, gardening, and walking. He was an entrepreneur and devoted father, husband, and friend. He was a passionate, tender-hearted human being who loved helping others. He also enjoyed caring for his loving wife when she was faced with unforeseen medical conditions.

Fermon was preceded in death by his mother, Lizzie Martin Poole; his father, Burris Poole; his brother, Robert Poole; and his sister, Pinkie Lou Ward. He leaves to mourn his wife, Penny Poole; his children, Karen Poole Foster of Washington DC and Gary Poole of Atlanta, GA, stepdaughter, Tanisha Thomas of Augusta, GA; his brothers and sisters, Annie Hardy of Atlanta GA, Christine Hooper (Samuel) of El Paso TX, Booker Tony Poole of Atlanta GA, Ollie M Fambrough (Sammie) of Atlanta GA, and Peggy Harris of Atlanta GA; grandkids, Daniel Foster, Kaitlyn Foster, Brandon Poole, Gary Poole Jr., Jessica Warner (Marshall), Taniyah Thomas, and Tyler Thomas; greatgrands, Shaniyah, Brandon Jr., Aiden, Marshall Jr., Maddux, and Kynnedi; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and close friends.

Interment with military honors will be held at 3:00pm on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at the Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Drive, Canton, Georgia 30114.

Reception to reminisce, celebrate, and honor Fermon Poole will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at Peace Baptist Church Fellowship Hall located at 4000 Covington Hwy, Decatur, GA 30032, between 10:30 a.m. and 12:00 noon. Immediately after the reception, those who would like to attend the interment with military honors should head to the Georgia National Cemetery located at 1080 Scott Hudgens Drive, Canton, GA 30114. Ceremony will begin promptly at 3:00 p.m. Due to heavy traffic, those that are attending should get on the road by 12:30 p.m.

This reception is about bringing the family closer and sharing memories of Fermon while breaking bread. This gathering will serve as a mutual space for family and friends to find comfort in each other's company, begin the healing process, and celebrate the life of Fermon.
