Douglas Oliver Hopkins, 79, entered into rest on Thursday, August 3, 2023.
Doug is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Rose "Ruby"; brother, Skip (Karen); sister, Janet; loving daughter, Robyn (Kent) and grandson, Matthew (Mykaluh); stepchildren, Shelley (Rich), Lesley (Doug), Jonelle (Hunt), and Johnny (Gina); grandchildren, Rhett, Kyle, Logan, Victoria, Jacob, Skyler (Luke), Devon, Hunt, Ford, Brynn, Carson (Matt), Leyton, Addison, Milania, Natalia, and Johnny; one great-grandson, Griffin; and one great-granddaughter on the way, Emersyn "Emmie Rose". He is preceded in death by his parents, Bernard Hopkins and Mildred Draleaus; sister, Carol; and his sidekick and little dog, Baby.
Doug was born in Greenfield, Massachusetts and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts until the age of 18, when he joined the Army at Ft, Bragg, North Carolina, and served 8 years in the 82nd Airborne where he completed over 500 jumps and was also a combat veteran serving in the Dominican Republic. He then went on to work as a lineman for Carolina Telephone in North Carolina, and then worked as a civilian at Ft. Bragg as a logistics manager until he retired at age 53. Doug was a proud patriot who loved his country and comrades. Doug was also an avid golfer, carpenter, and loved vacationing in his motor home.
Doug was highly respected and loved by all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed.
The family would like to send a special thank you to a dear friend, Daniel Harrell, for his help in caring for Doug, and also to Columbia County Fire and Rescue, Gold Cross Ambulance Service, and CRSA Home Health Evans (Beth Wallace, RN).
Per Doug's wishes, services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Doug's honor to Wounded Warrior Project or Tunnel to Towers Foundation .
