IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charles F.
Duffie "Freddie"
September 23, 1943 – July 13, 2023
Charles Frederick Duffie, 79, passed away peacefully at home, in the early hours of Thursday, July 13, 2023, after several years of declining health. He was born September 23, 1943, in Augusta, Georgia, the son of Ulysses Stevenson Duffie Sr. and Lillian Opal (Finch) Duffie. Most folks would know him as Freddie, but he went by several other names too: Slim, Reverend, Captain, Dad, Papa, Grandpa Freddie.
Slim lived in Augusta for most of his life where he had a close-knit group of friends going all the way back to elementary school. About him, they would say, "if you were lucky enough to have a friend in Slim, you had a friend for life". He was a lifelong member of Warren Baptist Church.
Freddie had an incredible talent for woodworking, and in 1983 began construction on the paddlewheel boat that earned him the title of Captain. The boat, which was moved into the Savannah River in 1996, eventually became known amongst his family and friends as the best seat in the house for Fourth of July fireworks at the downtown marina. He was hardworking, charismatic, generous, hilarious, and genuine.
In 1998, he became Papa. For the next fifteen years he was seldom seen without Squirt, his little buddy. They would fish, watch drag races, eat Waffle House, and ride around town. There are countless other stories about him, some of which might not be fit for polite company. He had a spark of adventure and, in a Peter Pan-esque way, never grew up. He loved to crack jokes, play pranks, and tell tales. He is one of few who can say that both of his ex-Mothers-in-Law still love him.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Cecil Duffie and Hubert Duffie; and his niece, Gail Duffie. Surviving are his two daughters, DeDe (Chris) Heard of Greenville, SC, and Lisa (Don) Duffie-Meeler of Augusta, GA; sister, Dottie Barton of Evans, GA; brothers, Steve (Gayle) Duffie of Evans, GA, Eugene (Wanda) Duffie of Martinez, GA, Michael (Diane) Duffie of Evans, GA, and Philip (Judy) Duffie of Grovetown, GA; grandchildren, Stephen (Jenny) Heard, Sarah (Devin) Heard-Daw, and Katrina Duffie; great-grandchildren, Grayson "Woodrow", Avery-Grace, and Marlee; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
